Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Relationships, SEXUAL HEALTH
As a practicing Doctor in Kenya, I have been consulted many times by patients experiencing erectile dysfunction (ED). Erectile dysfunction (Impotence) is so common affecting about 50% of men over 40 years of age and hence reducing quality of life. It becomes more common after the age of 65 years. You will be surprised by men over 80 years of age still looking to be sexually active visiting clinicians to treat their ED. What I have noted to be interesting is that even young men experience some form of erectile dysfunction due to drugs especially Miraa or Khat in our communities. Some of the people who chew khat report that they experience stronger emotional feelings when under the influence but down there they can’t perform. Some young men especially in our campuses use sildenafil commo
Virginity or Chastity?

Virginity or Chastity?

Medical Stories, Relationships, SEXUAL HEALTH, TRENDING
A lot has been said about virginity in our societies. Proof of virginity before marriage is so important in many communities such as the Somalis, Swahilis, and Arabs among many others, often making them go to extreme lengths to confirm the virginity status of a woman after marriage. I have heard of weird stories of the wedding night where relatives wait outside the door or some go to the extent of waiting inside the room for evidence that the lady was a virgin. This is sometimes followed by a bizarre occasion where the bride’s family dance in pride with the blood stained bed sheet, celebrating the ‘chastity’ of their daughter. This could turn to be quite the embarrassment to those who had already lost their virginity, forcing them to look for herbal medicine or even surgery to repair o

A lot of research has been done to determine the health effects of using social media and well-being in general with conflicting results. Some of the studies found that using social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram results in increased risk of depression, reduced self-esteem and increased feeling of insecurity. While other studies found the opposite of this, a simple comment by a friend can boost significantly the user’s mood. According to a new study on 12 Million Facebook users, social networking sites are associated with a longer life when used right that is used to enhance and not replace real-life social interactions. People with larger real-life social networks tend to live longer, and now it has been seen that online friendships play a significant role too. “I

BIRTH SPACING AND DEVELOPMENT IN OUR SOCIETIES – Contraception

By Libby Wacu The following key facts about contraception: Some contraception methods help control spread of STIs Family planning reduces the need for unsafe abortions Family planning reinforces people’s rights to determine the number and spacing of their children The above highlighted fact is a discovery that has been made over time by scientists around the world and by, simply, observation by many. Women who use long term reversible Contraception methods are four times more likely to wait more than 18 months between pregnancies compared to those relying on condoms; according to US researchers. This basically means two things; that it is advantageous to use these non-barrier methods in a typical modern family, have enough spacing between pregnancies and therefore allo

Relationships
By Nyakirugumi Njuguna In life, we find that special person or people fall in love or in like, as some of us who are allergic to the ‘Love’ word like to call it. Then follows the honey moon period when both of you are walking hand in hand over the rainbow and into the pot of gold. After a few months, the pretence wears off and we start seeing each other for who we truly are.  Eventually, we start pissing each other off. Squeezing the toothpaste from the wrong end, leaving clothes lying on the floor, appearing late on dates, taking each other for granted or even cheating that causes these relationships to end.  Depending on the reason for the break up, some endings are calm and mature but who are kidding, majority of relationships end in hysteria. We then go our separate ways and
Effects of Love on health

Effects of Love on health

General Health, Relationships
By Dr. Waithera Mbau Love is a beautiful thing. Many of us have been in love at one point in our lives, some lucky enough to have fallen in love numerous time. Many of us are however oblivious of the effects of love on our health. When one is in love, the brain releases certain hormones and neurotransmitters. These include: dopamine, norepinephrine, phenethylamine and oxytocin. If your loved one tells you they can’t sleep, can’t eat, can’t concentrate all because of you, best believe them. Elevated levels of dopamine and norepinephrine will cause lack of sleep. People in love tend to think obsessively about their loved one, this too is an effect of high levels of dopamine. One can’t concentrate on anything but their loved one. Elevated levels of norepinephrine and dopamine cau
