Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Relationships, SEXUAL HEALTH
As a practicing Doctor in Kenya, I have been consulted many times by patients experiencing erectile dysfunction (ED). Erectile dysfunction (Impotence) is so common affecting about 50% of men over 40 years of age and hence reducing quality of life. It becomes more common after the age of 65 years. You will be surprised by men over 80 years of age still looking to be sexually active visiting clinicians to treat their ED. What I have noted to be interesting is that even young men experience some form of erectile dysfunction due to drugs especially Miraa or Khat in our communities. Some of the people who chew khat report that they experience stronger emotional feelings when under the influence but down there they can’t perform. Some young men especially in our campuses use sildenafil commo

Vasalgel an experimental new type of male contraceptive that uses gel to block sperm flow has proven 100% success rates in monkey trials. This is news we all have been waiting for since we want to reduce the burden of contraception from our women. Contraceptive pills for male had been developed but later withdrawn due to their many side effects. Men contraceptive options are use of barrier method i.e condoms, withdrawing and vasectomy a permanent form of male contraception. Vasalgel brings hope to men who want to reduce the burden of contraception from their women as a reversible option for them. Currently, about 20% of men are already using the available options of male contraception. Vasalgel is injected into vas deferens the tubes that sperm flows down into the penis and acts as ...

Virginity or Chastity?

Medical Stories, Relationships, SEXUAL HEALTH, TRENDING
A lot has been said about virginity in our societies. Proof of virginity before marriage is so important in many communities such as the Somalis, Swahilis, and Arabs among many others, often making them go to extreme lengths to confirm the virginity status of a woman after marriage. I have heard of weird stories of the wedding night where relatives wait outside the door or some go to the extent of waiting inside the room for evidence that the lady was a virgin. This is sometimes followed by a bizarre occasion where the bride’s family dance in pride with the blood stained bed sheet, celebrating the ‘chastity’ of their daughter. This could turn to be quite the embarrassment to those who had already lost their virginity, forcing them to look for herbal medicine or even surgery to repair o

Genital herpes is mainly caused by herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) but can also be caused by herpes simplex 1 (HSV-1) due to oral sex, the latter recently being increasingly common. Type 1 herpes causes oral herpes associated with cold sores around the mouth. Most people are carriers of the infection and are not exhibiting any symptoms hence unaware that they have been infected. The herpes virus is spread by skin-to-skin contact and can be transmitted during vaginal, oral or anal sex. A study done in 1998 indicated that genital herpes is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) by the number of cases and 1.1 billion people around the world (15.9%) had asymptomatic genital herpes by 2013. The most common symptom is lesions on the genitalia, other symptoms may include pain,...

BIRTH SPACING AND DEVELOPMENT IN OUR SOCIETIES – Contraception

General Health, Relationships, SEXUAL HEALTH
By Libby Wacu The following key facts about contraception: Some contraception methods help control spread of STIs Family planning reduces the need for unsafe abortions Family planning reinforces people’s rights to determine the number and spacing of their children The above highlighted fact is a discovery that has been made over time by scientists around the world and by, simply, observation by many. Women who use long term reversible Contraception methods are four times more likely to wait more than 18 months between pregnancies compared to those relying on condoms; according to US researchers. This basically means two things; that it is advantageous to use these non-barrier methods in a typical modern family, have enough spacing between pregnancies and therefore allo

The incident of a cheating wife and her lover in Kisii county, Kenya  served as quite the entertainment to the crowd which gathered thrilled to witness a what they call ‘Ni kama Ndrama, Ni Kama Nvideo’ situation. This happened after the husband asked a witch doctor to curse his wife’s private parts when he suspected her for cheating. What was supposed to be a passionate randevú turned into an embarrassment and agony when the couple realised they could not pull away from one another. Defeated and hopeless, they started screaming for help as they became more and more desperate to unlock. This prompted the prying crowd who were not much there to help but rather satisfy their curiosity. Quite unbelievable I know, but I did not make it up, it was all in the news. As a scientist, I am
