Increase tax of sugary drinks to fight the global epidemics of obesity and diabetes.

Fitness and Weight loss, General Health
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has urged governments around the world to increase the tax of sugary drinks in order to fight the global epidemics of increased obesity and type 2 diabetes around the world, the WHO said in “Fiscal Policies for Diet and Prevention of Non-communicable Diseases”, a report issued on World Obesity Day. It is their hope that by increasing the tax of sweet drinks the prices would go up and hence less consumption. This would decrease obesity in our population since sugary drinks is one of the major contributors of obesity especially childhood obesity and hence reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes among other deadly diseases. According to the Ministry of health, a third of Kenyan women are either overweight or obese attributed to poor nutrition.

By Dr. Sally Getugi This is one lady's opinion. Allow it. Women are complex beings, it has to be said. Men don't understand us and we don't understand each other. So when it comes to the issue of weight and losing weight and fitness, understand that everyone has their reasons and their 'ways'. Granted that some are not the best of ways, i.e the extreme fad diets or the juicing diets or the count my calories but unfortunately there are people out there making money from this ill advice. I happen to be one who is slowly reverting to my 'healthy and fitness' mind set and for this reason I have been known to turn down food or snacks and dismiss it with 'am on a diet'. It's much easier to say in a sentence than the whole truth which is ' I miss having the feeling of being healthy and ...

By Dr. Kubai Wendo Recently a friend of mine asked me to write an article about weight lose. That was pretty easy for me since I knew everything about losing weight, I had already researched so much about this topic for a long period of time. To be honest I had researched about it since I discovered the internet and more so since I had a phone that could Google. Over the years I have acquired a lot of information about losing weight, some of it very interesting, some makes sense and some completely insane. Apart from reading, I have also tried almost all that information. As some would say putting the words into action. I have had gym membership where I attended everyday, it was tiring but I still held on thinking and being motivated of the final image in my mind that I had, even th...

By Dr Wanjiku Wainaina As I sat on one of the seats in my (read, my salonist’s- knowing full well that that word does not exist) small Kibera salon one day, writhing in pain, and desperately praying for it to be over like a child does when they are on a longer-than-they-are-used-to journey, I ran into a magazine on health. And I was quite pleasantly surprised-- so much so that I completely forgot the atrocities that she was committing upon my scalp, and became fully immersed in page after glossy page. This particular issue had many interesting stories, but then again in my long history of salon visits and boring salon magazines, I had quickly learned not to be picky. So I came across this article in particular of a type of yoga which they referred to as Bikram Yoga (yes, there are m
