By Dr. Omar Hamid. State of the nation you said? that time when a time check, reality check and better yet checks on the ups and downs the country has gone through? More than just a day when the Head of the sate shows up to address bunch of insensate and benighted members of Parliament in a live televised event.   We can never know how far we got where we are without taking a cursory look at the past to make sense and take stock of the present and to have a good view of the future. Going by our trends in this country for the last 4 years, Jubilee regime like any other sitting government had their fair share of not living to its expectations.   Please spare me the complacency of saying no regime delivers on its manifesto in totality. As far as i am concerned, a ...

Who are you? Do you walk around priding yourself in your profession? Well it's time for a reality check. If you should have learned something from the teacher's strike and the ongoing doctors strike in Kenya is that You ARE A SLAVE!!! The slave master in this case the employer is protected by the law. In both instances the courts have declared the strikes Illegal. The constitution allows everyone to participate in industrial action but is that really the case? In the ongoing doctors strike the union officials were jailed. Does that remind you of a certain era in this country?? Does that remind you of a time in the United States? Does that remind you of a time in South Africa? A few days ago a Presidential directive was given for the striking doctors to go back to work. That was b...

Care of the feet for people with Diabetes – Diabetes ulcers/foot infections.

General Health, Medical Information, Medicine, Surgery
Diabetes Mellitus or simply diabetes is very common in our today society. We have special clinics in our hospitals whereby we follow up patients with diabetes in order to optimize their diabetes control and the drugs for diabetes in our patients. In these visits, we also emphasize on diet, lifestyle and general care for people with diabetes. On the care, we educate our patients on the care of the feet in order to prevent diabetes ulcers/foot since it’s easy to get ulcers if not careful due to reduced protective sensation of pain and the healing is slower compared to general population since there is usually compromise of the blood supply from micro-vascular disease. When infected, it’s not easy to treat because of the compromised reach of the antibiotics due to the same. If care is

I sympathize with him and any other patient that has suffered over the 2 months strike period or even before the strike. There has been cases of medical negligence and apologies are in order in that regard, nevertheless the medical board has been pro active in dealing with such cases. Howev...
Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Relationships, SEXUAL HEALTH
As a practicing Doctor in Kenya, I have been consulted many times by patients experiencing erectile dysfunction (ED). Erectile dysfunction (Impotence) is so common affecting about 50% of men over 40 years of age and hence reducing quality of life. It becomes more common after the age of 65 years. You will be surprised by men over 80 years of age still looking to be sexually active visiting clinicians to treat their ED. What I have noted to be interesting is that even young men experience some form of erectile dysfunction due to drugs especially Miraa or Khat in our communities. Some of the people who chew khat report that they experience stronger emotional feelings when under the influence but down there they can’t perform. Some young men especially in our campuses use sildenafil commo

Vasalgel an experimental new type of male contraceptive that uses gel to block sperm flow has proven 100% success rates in monkey trials. This is news we all have been waiting for since we want to reduce the burden of contraception from our women. Contraceptive pills for male had been developed but later withdrawn due to their many side effects. Men contraceptive options are use of barrier method i.e condoms, withdrawing and vasectomy a permanent form of male contraception. Vasalgel brings hope to men who want to reduce the burden of contraception from their women as a reversible option for them. Currently, about 20% of men are already using the available options of male contraception. Vasalgel is injected into vas deferens the tubes that sperm flows down into the penis and acts as ...
